NAME    [Toc]    [Back]

ipanel - customization panel for setting locale, timezone and keyboard

SYNOPSIS    [Toc]    [Back]

     /usr/sbin/ipanel

DESCRIPTION    [Toc]    [Back]

ipanel allows the user to change the environment's	international settings
consisting	of locale, keyboard layout, and	timezone specification through
a graphical user interface. Individual users' environments	as well	as the
system default environment	can be set by using ipanel. If	the specified
combination of the	country	and language does not exist as one of the
defined locales in	the system, ipanel will	generate the appropriate
customized	composite locale files. For example, a	user may select	a new
locale, specifying	United States but with Japanese	as a language.	A user
needs to have super-user privilege	or be able to enter the	root password
to	create a new composite locale or to change system international
     settings.

The icons and pushbuttons are displayed in	the language and character
encoding of the locale currently in effect. The order of icons from left
to	right are Country, Language, Keyboard and Timezone, each of which are
associated	with dialog boxes for showing selection	of entries from
     scrollable	lists of
     - Items associated	with current locale category,
     - Items supported by the system, or
     - All items for which any information was found on	the system.

Country Sets the international	settings (locale, keyboard layout, and
timezone) associated with the user's desired country.
Altering the Country selection	resets the Language, Keyboard
and Timezone to the defaults for the selected country.
Therefore, this option	must be	set first, before selecting
		 the other three specifications.

Language Sets the user's desired local language	and other culturespecific
parameters such as monetary unit, numerical format,
date/time format. As the dialog boxes	are displayed in the
specified language, selection of language will	have immediate
effect	on the ipanel dialog boxes. Altering the Language
		 selection changes the locale.

Keyboard Changes the keyboard layout mapping by	altering the X
		 server's keymap.

Timezone Sets the system date/time format to the user's	desired
timezone. If the timezone has	daylight saving	time, the
setting will be automatically changed from the	timezone
		 database.

The pushbuttons are Cancel, Set System and	Set Personal in	top to bottom
     order.

Cancel Exits ipanel without any change to the	files used for
		 international settings.

Set System Updates the default international settings located in system
level directory upon completion of the	ipanel session.
Depending on the termination option, some of the settings may
not take effect until the system is restarted.

     Set Personal
Updates the default international settings located in user's
home directory. Depending on the termination option, some of
the altered settings may not take effect until	the user logs
out and then logs in.	To ensure a consistent environment in
the newly selected international settings, select Logout Now
		 exit option.

Description of user options in terminating	ipanel are as follows:

     Return to Map
Returns to ipanel's main window without any further action.

Exit Anyway Exits ipanel without any change to the	files used for
		 international settings.

     Save and Exit
Saves the settings and	exits ipanel. Depending on changes
made, a user will be directed to a dialog box with different
		 exit options.

     Desktop Applications
This is one of	the two	update options when a new composite
locale	is created. This option updates international
settings for the desktop applications and does	not update the
$HOME/.lang file for locale. See IID(1) for the definition
		 of IRIX Interactive Desktop applications.

     All applications
This is the second of the two update options when a new
composite locale is created. This option updates settings
for the desktop and the all other applications, including the
		 update	of the $HOME/.lang file.

     Exit to Desktop
Saves the settings and	exits ipanel. Although	the required
files for international settings will be updated, the user's
system	and desktop environment	may not	be completely changed
to the	new settings, depending	on when	the updated files will
		 be processed.

Logout Now Saves the settings and	then logs out from the current desktop
session. User's new personal international settings will be
in effect after logging back in.

Restart Now Saves the settings and	then restarts the host machine.
System's new international settings will be in	effect.

When updating international system	settings or creating a new composite
locale without super-user privilege, the system root password must	be
entered to	complete the operation. There are two options which can be
selected with the correct password. When the password is not entered or
is	incorrect, these options are ignored and ipanel	exits without
     completing	the operation.

Complete this operation without granting any privileges
This completes	the changes to the system level	files without
granting the user a special auto-privilege for	ipanel
		 operation.

Grant permanent privileges	for this operation
This completes	the changes to the system level	files and
grants	the user a special auto-privilege so that the
subsequent ipanel operations during the current login session
can be	accomplished without re-entering the root password.
This option is	useful for creating several new	composite
		 locales.

Like most other customization panels, panel has the `runonce' feature,
meaning only one instance of the application will run from	the toolchest
at	one time. Attempting to launch	ipanel a second	time will have the
effect of deiconifying the	application window or popping it to the	top on
the current desk. In future releases, this	`runonce' feature may be
extended to command line and icon catalog launches.

For more information about	the entire IRIX	Interactive Desktop
environment, see the IID(1) man page.

NOTES    [Toc]    [Back]

A button with flashing yellow border in the main ipanel window indicates
that the corresponding setting was	automatically determined and has not
     been confirmed.

where hostname is replaced	by the name of the system as returned by the
hostname(1) command and $HOME is the user's home directory. The
