select convert(numeric(16,2), 5.329),convert(numeric(16,2), '5.329')

returns

5.32 5.33

I would like to understand the logic behind this behavior, if any.

On what Sybase exactly? I have ISQL 12.5 and result is 5.33 and 5.33
(normal).
